The history of social networking starts with MySpace.  Remember Tom?  At the peak of MySpace's heyday, facebook was released and was offered only to select university students around the world.  Within the year of facebook’s birth, it was opened to anyone with an email address and soon after several unique features were developed including unavoidable status updates, games such as farmville and other sinful pleasures that quickly put MySpace on the same dusty shelf that holds the Ace of Base cassette collection.   While still immensly popular, facebook has a new threat:  Google+.  Released by invitation only in June 2011, Google+ might be the network that turns facebook into a historical reference.  For a good laugh, watch the parody below and see what happens when Mark Zuckerberg (creator of facebook) meets Tom from MySpace.
